Simple Conversations in English

Note: in conversations, we often leave out small words.
For example, instead of saying 'It's nice to meet you", Amy says "Nice to meet you."
Either way is fine.

Meeting someone for the first time.

  • "Hello. My name is John."
  • "Hello John, I'm Amy. Nice to meet you."
  • "Nice to meet you too."

Meeting someone you know.

  • "Hi John. How are you?"
  • "I'm good. How are you?"
  • "I'm alright. Just a bit tired."
  • "Why's that?"
  • "I'm not sure. Maybe I'm working too hard."

At the shop.

  • "How much is this apple, please?"
  • "It's 50 pence."
  • "Okay. I'll take two, please."

Asking for directions.

  • "Excuse me, where's the post office?"
  • "It's just down the road, on the left."
  • "Thank you very much!"

Talking about the weather.

  • "Isn't it a lovely day?"
  • "It is. But it's a bit hot for me."
  • "Really? I love it hot!"

In a restaurant.

  • "Can I have the menu, please?"
  • "Of course. Here it is."
  • "Thanks. Could I have a glass of water?"

Talking about hobbies.

  • "What do you like doing in your free time?"
  • "I read a lot. How about you?"
  • "I like playing football."

Making plans.

  • "Are you free tomorrow night?"
  • "I think so. Why?"
  • "There's a band on at that pub we like."
  • "Sounds good. Do you want a lift?"
  • "Yes please! About seven o clock?"
  • "Cool. See you then!"

Saying goodbye.

  • "I have to go now."
  • "It was nice talking to you."
  • "You too! See you later."
